These design infrastructure topic areas are being introduced as a key component of the broader electronic design circuit and systems focus that is at DAC’s core.
DAC invites all companies that are part of this vital and expanding area of the electronic product design industry to participate and exhibit in the Design Infrastructure Alley.
The Design Automation Conference (DAC), the premier conference devoted to the design of electronic circuits and systems, will this year showcase exhibits and presentations centered on information technology (IT) infrastructure, which is a crucial element in the creation of electronic systems and components. Behind the scenes of every electronic product design effort is a team of professionals, using sophisticated hardware and software, that ensures that the computing bandwidth, availability, licensing, security and storage needs are in place so that project teams can execute. The design infrastructure ecosystem is made up of IT and design professionals who manage these complex computing resources and the hardware and software products and services that are required so that design teams can accomplish their mission.
Call for Presentations and Panel Discussions at the Design-on-Cloud Pavilion
The Design Infrastructure Alley features a dedicated Design-on-Cloud Pavilion theater for presentations and panel discussions. A limited number of 45-minute speaking slots and panel discussions are available. Exhibitors located in the Design Infrastructure Alley have priority for the available presentations slots.
All participants in any of the five topic areas (license management, grid computing, storage management, data security and cloud computing) are invited to submit presentations or panel proposals that describe experiences, best practices, innovations, limitations and future directions. Submissions should further the discussion and exchange of ideas in the topic areas and avoid product or sales pitches. The Design Automation Conference (DAC) will again host the popular Silicon and Technology Art Show to celebrate the beauty in the design of leading-edge electronic systems and components. The first Silicon and Technology Art Show was held in 2016 at the 53rd DAC in Austin, Texas. This first-of-its-kind art show provided DAC attendees with a glimpse of beauty and elegance behind the creativity in designing electronic systems. The grand prize winner of the 2016 art show was Conventor, Inc., who presented a 14nm FinFET Technology SEMulator3D®.
DAC 2018 invites members of the design automation community to submit digital images related to electronic design automation and semiconductor worthy of framing and display by April 15, 2018. DAC will handle all framing, display the images at DAC, and let submitters take the final printed and framed piece home with them after the conference. Examples of what the DAC Executive Committee is looking for include, but are not limited to:
Die photoshots of silicon designs
Design floorplans and placements
3D wiring or clock-tree visualizations
Lithographic images
Thermal maps
Congestion maps
Interesting logic structures
Each piece submitted will be framed and displayed starting Monday, June 25th at the 55th DAC being held June 24 – 28, 2018 at Moscone West Center, San Francisco, CA. Pieces will be judged in several categories, and winners for each category will be announced on Monday night, June 25th at the art show and networking reception starting at 6:00 P.M. at Moscone West Center. Grand Prize – Best piece out of all categories
“Working in the design automation community, we see breathtaking images every day,” said Chuck Alpert, past chair of the 53rd DAC and organizer of the Silicon Technology Art Show. “We look forward to showcasing this artwork so that the rest of the world can see the beauty of electronic devices with billions of transistors, complex algorithms, data visualizations and clever data structures.”
Art show judges will award a winner in each category with a trophy. Winners will also be featured on the cover of IEEE Design & Test magazine late 2018. A grand prize will be awarded to one piece, which will be announced at the DAC awards session Tuesday morning, June 26th, at the conference and publicized after the conference.
Opportunities for Students to Engage in the Premier Event Focused on the Design and Automation of Electronic Circuits and Systems
For more than 54 years, the Design Automation Conference (DAC) has striven to foster a vibrant worldwide community of electronic design and systems professionals as well as improve the diversity among attendees. DAC’s student fellow and scholarship programs are designed to give young students their first experience with the electronic design and systems industry.
Newton Young Student Fellow Program:
In honor of the memory of Dr. A. Richard Newton, The Newton Young Student Fellow Program actively supports the next engineering generation by enabling young students at the beginning of a career to enter the dynamic world of design and automation of electronic systems. Each Young Student Fellow will actively engage at DAC through numerous events, including meetings with design automation luminaries, attendance at technical sessions and exhibits, participation in student-related events at DAC, and a poster session designed to introduce each Young Student Fellow to the DAC community.
Each selected Fellow will receive a free DAC full conference registration including tutorials. In addition, DAC will issue partial grants to cover travel expenses, subject to some matching funds from the student’s advisor or university.
The awardees will participate in the following activities during the conference:
Participate in the DAC summer school on Sunday, June 24.
Kickoff breakfast meeting on Monday, June 25 sponsored by Cadence.
Selected conference sessions, including sessions with Best Paper Award nominations.
Poster presentation (either current research, or relevant coursework/projects) introducing each Fellow during the DAC student event.
Attendance at the awards ceremony.
Attendance at the closing session during the Thursday evening reception.
Social media postings (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) to provide timely news, photos and feedback on events during DAC.
The awardees are required to participate in all the events in this program and to share their experiences at DAC on social media outlets at least twice daily.
Preference is given to junior or senior undergraduates in Engineering; to under-represented demographics such as women and minorities; to students in smaller research groups; to students pursuing a master’s degree and pre-candidacy Ph.D. students. In past years, DAC has sponsored more than 70 students as part of this program.
To apply for a Newton Young Student Fellowship, students must complete the application form. The submission site is open now through March 7, 2018. Qualifying students will be notified by April 2, 2018. Conference participation will be June 24 – 28, 2018 at the Moscone West Center, San Francisco, CA.
P.O. Pistilli Scholarship Program:
The objective of the P.O. Pistilli Undergraduate Scholarship for Advancement in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering is to increase the number of professionals in electrical engineering, computer engineering and computer science from under-represented groups.
Scholarships of $4,000 per year, renewable for up to five years, are awarded annually to between two and seven high school seniors who have a 3.00 GPA or better (on a 4.00 scale), have demonstrated high achievement in math and science courses, have a strong desire to pursue careers in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science, and who have demonstrated substantial financial need.

The 55th Design Automation Conference to Feature a System Design Contest Highlighting Today’s Latest Embedded Technology in Machine Learning
The 2018 Design Automation Conference (DAC) will feature a Systems Design Contest targeting machine learning on embedded hardware. The System Design Contest was created and organized by Chris Rowen, Cognite Ventures; Yiyu Shi, Professor, University of Notre Dame; Jingtong Hu, Professor, University of Pittsburgh; and Bei Yu, Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong. Contest sponsors are ACM/Sigma and DAC, along with premier contest sponsors NVIDIA, Xilinx and drone maker, DJI. The call for participating teams started in September 2017 with an overwhelming response of 143 teams applying. After careful review, 114 teams were selected to compete in the contest. Fifty teams chose to develop their drone technology on the adaptable Xilinx PYNQ Platform, which uses the Python programming language and libraries to exploit the benefits of programmable logic and microprocessors on Xilinx’s Zynq combined FPGA and CPU. Based on their projects, other teams received an NVIDIA Jetson TX2, a powerful GPU computing platform for artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge with more than a Teraflop of performance. NVIDIA Jetson comes with JetPack SDK which features TensorRT, optimizer and runtime for speeding up deep learning inference tasks such as image classification, segmentation, and object detection.
Teams are competing in the six months leading up to the 55th Design Automation Conference, being held June 24 – 28, 2018, at Moscone West Center, San Francisco, CA.
