SPIE Photonics West 2026, January 17–22, San Francisco

October 3, 2025 By admin

Registration is now officially open for SPIE Photonics West 2026, the world’s largest and most influential gathering in optics and photonics, set to take place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center from 17 to 22 January. This annual event has long been recognized as the beating heart of the photonics industry, drawing thousands of scientists, engineers, business leaders, and innovators from across the globe. The scale of the conference is remarkable, featuring more than 100 technical conferences, 150 special events, and five major exhibitions with over 1,200 companies showcasing their latest breakthroughs. For anyone invested in the future of light-based technologies, Photonics West is the most important date on the calendar.

The 2026 edition will spotlight six major application areas that demonstrate the breadth of optics and photonics research and commercialization. BiOS remains the central hub for advances in biophotonics, biomedical optics, and imaging technologies designed to revolutionize diagnostics and therapeutics. LASE will focus on the laser industry and its diverse applications across manufacturing, defense, and communications. OPTO will dive deep into optoelectronics, materials, and devices that are shaping next-generation systems. Quantum West will highlight the rapidly expanding “Quantum 2.0” ecosystem, from sensing and information systems to quantum-enabled biology and materials. AR | VR | MR will bring together developers and hardware leaders in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, underscoring the essential role of optics in immersive technologies. And new for 2026, Vision Tech will shine a spotlight on fast-evolving vision technologies such as AI-driven imaging, hyperspectral and multispectral systems, embedded vision, and 3D sensing.

The exhibitions themselves are massive, each tailored to a specific sector. The BiOS Expo (17–18 January) will showcase the latest in biomedical optics and healthcare applications. The AR | VR | MR Expo (20–22 January) will highlight headsets and hardware advancements for XR. The Quantum West Expo (20–22 January) will present global leaders in quantum-enabling technologies. The brand-new Vision Tech Expo (20–22 January) will focus on imaging and sensing innovations. The core Photonics West Exhibition (20–22 January) remains the largest, encompassing everything from cutting-edge lasers to advanced optical components and systems. Each expo will be complemented by product launches, live demos, and thought-provoking industry sessions, ensuring that attendees gain both technical depth and commercial perspective.

Beyond the exhibitions, SPIE has curated a dynamic program of industry-focused events. The Quantum West Business Summit will provide insights into how quantum technologies are moving from lab to market. The prestigious SPIE Prism Awards will once again honor the most groundbreaking industry innovations, while the SPIE Startup Challenge will showcase entrepreneurial ventures and emerging companies vying for visibility and support. These high-energy programs make Photonics West not only a technical conference but also a vibrant marketplace of ideas, investment, and opportunity.

Plenary sessions in 2026 will feature an impressive slate of speakers drawn from leading universities, research institutes, corporations, and government bodies worldwide. From Scott Diddams of the University of Colorado Boulder to Prineha Narang of UCLA, from ESA’s Zoran Sodnik to Stanford’s Jonathan T.C. Liu, the plenary lineup reflects the global and interdisciplinary nature of photonics research. Topics will range from quantum sensing and nanophotonics to biomedical imaging, space optics, and AI-driven vision systems, ensuring that attendees will be exposed to the very latest in scientific discovery and technological application.

Education and professional development remain a cornerstone of Photonics West. More than 60 technical courses will be offered, including 13 new ones covering areas such as machine learning for optical imaging, 2D-to-3D integrated circuits, Fourier optics, and practical optics training for technicians. In alignment with the new Vision Tech track, courses on imaging fundamentals like camera noise will also be introduced. Attendees will also benefit from hands-on workshops, career-building sessions, and networking opportunities. A significant new feature for 2026 will be the SPIE Career Hub, which offers mentoring, résumé reviews, speed networking, a job fair, and other tailored resources designed to empower professionals at every stage of their careers.

Adding a strategic global dimension, SPIE will host its third Global Business Forum on 19 January, co-located with Photonics West. This one-day gathering will focus on the international photonics market and release SPIE’s annual report on the state of the industry, offering valuable insights for executives and business leaders navigating the competitive global landscape.

SPIE Photonics West 2026 promises to be more than just a conference. It is a crossroads of science, innovation, and commerce, where technologies that will shape the future of medicine, computing, communications, defense, and consumer applications are unveiled and debated. As SPIE Senior Director Jenifer Dodds noted, “This is where the future of photonics takes center stage.” Whether your interest lies in lasers, biomedicine, quantum, immersive reality, or vision technologies, San Francisco in January 2026 will be the place where breakthroughs are revealed, connections are forged, and the photonics community once again sets the pace for global innovation.
