Persistent Memory Hackathon to Debut at Flash Memory Summit 2019, August 6-8 2019 at the Santa Clara Convention Center

May 10, 2019 By admin

Flash Memory Summit (FMS), the world’s premiere flash memory conference and exposition, today announced it will host its first Persistent Memory (PM) hackathon to help designers take immediate advantage of this breakthrough technology. Persistent memory is a new class of memory that delivers maximum performance for data-centric applications such as databases, AI/ML, real-time analytics, security, IoT, and image and video processing. The FMS hackathon gives attendees valuable, hands-on experience in how to add persistent memory support and achieve 10X performance gains for critical data center applications. The hackathon will be offered as a drop-in event during FMS 2019, to be held August 6-8 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

“No one needs to be sold on the idea of accessing storage at memory speeds,” said Chuck Sobey, Conference Chairperson for Flash Memory Summit. “However, the immediate problem is how to enable existing software to take full advantage of currently available persistent memory solutions. The Persistent Memory Hackathon will equip attendees with the knowledge needed to make applications run much faster immediately…and even faster in the future.”

Hackathon Details
Persistent memory, which delivers storage at memory speeds, eliminates the long disk access times of hard disk drives and even exceeds the top performance of NVMe flash. However, applications must be aware that PM exists in the system. Attendees will learn how to configure systems with persistent memory. They will then learn the basics of code development based on open-source PM code found at PMDK.io and already available in Linux and Windows. Attendees will become PM competent in just a few hours while networking with like-minded peers. Participants will also learn about the available types of persistent memory, typical applications, and future trends for PM. After the hackathon, attendees can enable applications to run faster, quickly process enormous amounts of data, and provide rapid access everywhere and anytime within the network.

According to the Pmem.io website, “Systems containing persistent memory can outperform legacy configurations, providing faster start-up times, faster access to large in-memory datasets, and often improved total cost of ownership.” MKW Ventures predicts a multi-billion dollar market for persistent memory by 2021.

FMS 2019 also features a PM pre-conference introductory seminar on August 5, a PM Programming Tutorial, and a full two-day track on the subject that includes invited talks and special sessions. It also covers other emerging subjects such as NVMe, NVMe-oF, NVMe/TCP, new non-volatile memory technologies, and computational storage.

Now in its 14th year, Flash Memory Summit features the latest technology trends, the industry’s most innovative products, and the broadest coverage of this rapidly expanding market. In 2018, FMS drew more than 6,500 registrants and more than 120 exhibitors. The 2019 event already projects significant growth. The conference also features marketing and market research tracks plus sessions sponsored by NVM Express®, SNIA, JEDEC, SD Card Association, and UFSA. Popular continuing features include an expert table session, performance testing results, CTO and CMO panels, market research sessions, annual updates, industry trends and overviews, and a VC Forum.

The Flash Memory Summit, produced by Conference ConCepts, showcases the mainstream applications, key technologies, and leading vendors that are driving the multi-billion dollar non-volatile memory and SSD markets. FMS is now the world’s largest event featuring the trends, innovations, and influencers driving the adoption of flash memory in demanding enterprise storage applications, as well as in smartphones, tablets, and mobile and embedded systems.
