U.S. Education Department, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Host Work-Based Learning Conference

The U.S. Department of Education and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will co-host the “Strengthening Work-based Learning in Education and Transition to Careers” conference in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, July 26, Johan E. Uvin, deputy assistant secretary, delegated the duties as assistant secretary for Career, Technical and Adult Education and Kim Hunter Reed, deputy under secretary, U.S. Department of Education, will give remarks. Uvin will also moderate two panels: Project Overview: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Work-based Learning Study; What the Research Tells Us (summarizing the research and findings from promising work-based learning initiatives in the U.S. and abroad); and Reaction Panel from Abroad (International guests react to the research and findings that resonate with their experience in providing work-based learning.

On Wednesday, July 27, Roberto Rodriguez, Deputy Assistant to the President for Education Lynne M. Gilli, acting assistant state superintendent and program manager for instruction, Division of Career and College Readiness, Maryland State Department of Education, will give remarks. Uvin and Eric Seleznow, deputy assistant secretary, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, will give closing remarks.

The conference affords participants opportunities to explore how work-based learning experiences can integrate young people into long-term career pathways and academic success. The event is the fifth in a series of six workshops that are part of a research and technical assistance project being conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
